Comparison Essay

“Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury and “Praying” by Kesha have many similarities and differences. In both, the main characters are trying to overcome something and are having to become stronger. “Farenheit 451” is about Guy Montag who is trying to overcome society and government, but also must face internal struggles. “Praying” is about a young woman overcoming someone who has mistreated her. She has to face her internal struggles and become stronger. In both texts, someone has to overcome someone and become stronger. The theme in both is that no matter what happens, you need to be stronger.

In the two texts, both characters struggled internally. It becomes very evident in “Fahrenheit 451” that Guy is struggling internally on page 75. He starts to go crazy due to the challenges he is facing. On page 75 it says, “dentrifice Dentrifice Dentrifice. The train radio vomited upon Montag.” The book then continues on to say, “‘ Lilies of the field.’ ‘Denham’s.’ ‘Lilies, I said!’ The people stared.” This shows that he was struggling internally because something as little as an advertisement made him upset. In ” Praying,” the main character is also struggling internally. You can tell because in the song it says, “And I don’t need you I found a strength I’ve never known.” This shows that she has found a new strength inside of her. Another similarity is both main charcaters had to become stronger. In “Fahrenheit 451″ on page 117 it says, ” You must remember, burn them or they’ll burn you, he thought. Right now it’s as simple as that.” This shows that as the story progressed he became stronger and more willing to fight. In “Praying” it says, “I can thank you for how strong I have become.”

Both texts have differences though. Although they have very alike themes, they present them in different ways. One difference is “Fahrenheit 451” takes place in the future and “Praying” takes place in the present. In “Fahrenheit 451” it says, “‘ Do you ever read any of the books you burn?’ ‘That’s against the law!'” This would cause the reader to infer that the books take place in the future because we are allowed to read in the present.” In “Praying,” the song does not show that it take place in the past or future. So you must infer that it takes place in the present. Another difference the texts have in presenting the theme is who they have to overcome. In “Praying” she must overcome one person and in “Fahrenheit 451” Guy has to overcome the government. On page 5 it says, “‘Do you read any of the books you burn?’ ‘That’s against the law!'” This shows that he must overcome government because the laws prohibit him reading. In “Praying” it says, “When I’m finished they won’t even know your name.” So since they since they said “your name” instead of “your names” you can infer that it was one person.

In conclusion “Praying” by Kesha and “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury have very alike themes. The theme in both is that no matter what, you need to stay strong.  Both characters had to overcome internal and external struggles. They both had to overcome something. Although they may have presented the themes differently, they both have the same theme.

Literary Essay on Farenheit 451

Ray Bradbury’s dystopian story Farenheit 451 is about A man named Guy Montag who is a fireman and lives an overall boring life. Until one day he reveals that he has been secretly keeping books in his home and is beginning to read them. This causes everything to change and he becomes more thoughtful and intelligent and his life starts to become more interesting. One main lesson in the story is not being curious and willing to come up with your own ideas can cause ignorance and leads to a boring life.
In the beginning of the story the author develops a theme because of how he shows that Guy lives an overall boring life and Clarisse is much more interesting. This is all because Guy has yet to start reading and questioning things. Guy is not curious and Clarisse is. In the beginning of the story Guy says, “You think too many things.” This shows that he does not want to think about anything other than what he has been taught to think versus Clarisse who thinks outside than what she has been told to think. As shown Clarisse seems to be much more intelligent and clever than Guy is. You can also tell that Guy lives a boring life based on the metaphors and similes in the story. One example of this is, “It was like coming into the cold marbled room of a mausoleum after the moon has set.” This shows that even things like his house were lifeless. Another one is how Bradbury uses details to convey the boring life Guy lives. In the beginning of the story it says, “Complete darkness, not a hint of the silver world outside, the windows tightly shut, the chamber of tomb-world where no sound from the great city could penetrate.” All of these points show that without curiosity Guy seems to be ignorant and lives a very boring life.

In the middle of the story a lot happened that contributed to theme of the story. Guy revealed his secret library to Mildred. He also continued to investigate the books around and started to read the books. This is when his life started to become more interesting. Faber, who is Guy’s friend, says “I remember newspapers dying like moths.” This shows that he comes up with similes and metaphors that show his wisdom versus someone that has not read books. Beatty also explains why there is no more books. His says, “school is shortened, discipline relaxed, philosophies, histories, languages dropped… Life is immediate, the job counts, pleasure lies all about after work.” This is important because it shows people stopped caring about knowledge and just let everything that involves intelligence to plummet. This is what caused people to begin living boring lives.

In the end of the story, Guy slowly started to become more passionate about books, realizing how amazing they are. Due to this, his life starts to become more interesting. You can tell that he cares about his books because when Beatty and Guy pull up to his house in the firetruck, the book says, “Montag’s face was entirely numb and featureless.” He couldn’t believe the fact that his books would be destroyed. Another example of this is when Beatty forces Guy to burn his books. Guy actually murders Beatty. He does this because he hates Beatty trying to tell Guy to not read books and just stick to the laws government has made. The ending also shows that these people who have just listened to whatever the government says are ignorant. In page 142 someone says, The search is over, Montag is dead; a crime against society has been avenged.” This shows that people just assume that those who read are bad just because government has told them that.

Some people might disagree with this point though. Some may say that by listening to what others say, you can still continue to be intelligent and grow your mind in spite of that. However, this is not true. By finding our own ideas and developing those you will become more intelligent that someone who just listens to everyone else’s ideas. If you watch Guy throughout the story he becomes more intelligent and his mind starts to come up with its own ideas. This shows that you must try to not listen to what others say.

In conclusion, one main lesson of the story is not being curious and willing to come up with your own ideas will lead to ignorance and a boring life. This is because in the story that Guy leads shows that as he started to read books and coming up with his own ideas than he started to have a much more open mind and he became intelligent and started to live a much more interesting life.

Introduction to Fahrenheit 451

The setting of Fahrenheit 451 is in a dystopia. It has not said exactly where it takes place. The time frame is somewhere in the future. The setting is odd because it actually resembles everyday life in the real world. I think that this helps show that the dystopia in the book is actually that far off from where the world is in this day and age.

The main character of the story was Guy Montag. He is a firefighter. He is not the type of firefighter you would expect though. Instead of putting out fires, he creates them. He burns books. He meets his young neighbor Clarrise, who shows him what life was like when people did not have to live in fear and could see ideas through books instead of just television.

Gendered Workplace Discrimination

Right now, in the workplace, women are being discriminated against for their gender. There are many issues like wage gap, ability to get promotions, interview questions, starting salaries, and the ability to even get the job. Even with proper job qualifications, women still continue to struggle in the workplace.

The first issue is the wage gap. The wage gap is the significant difference in pay women and men make for doing the same job with the same qualifications. The current wage gap is that women only make seventy-seven percent of what men make, or seventy-seven cents to the dollar. “That”s not fair!” says Emma Fiess. “We should be getting equal treatment.” There is actually a legal act that was put into place called the equal pay act of 1963. It helped take the wage gap from sixty-two percent to seventy-seven percent. This means it helped close the wage gap by fifteen percent. However, there is still a significant difference between what men and women make.

Another important issue is the ability to get a job or receive a promotion. In a recent study performed by Corrine Moss-Racusin, scientists that run a laboratory were given job applications. Every application was identical except for one thing: Their name and gender. Half of the scientists were given applications with a male’s name and the other half of were given applications with a female name. In the end, men scored significantly higher in projected competence, hire ability, and their willingness to mentor them. Even though all of the information was identical. another interesting result of this was how much they were willing to give as a starting salary. they were willing to give men a starting salary of $30,238.10 and only give women a tarting salary of $26,507.94. Even with the identical information.

Another thing women struggle with in the workplace is the interview questions. one very interesting example of this is the interview questions they are asked if they have, or plan on having children. These types of questions lead into another important topic where statistics show that women who have children are less likely to be hired than women who don’t have children and men.

Another interesting topic is women are more likely to be judged based on their appearance than men. Some women struggle to be taken seriously in the workplace because they are “too pretty” or “too young.” Some women also struggle with being told they can not do particular jobs, such as salesperson, because they are not “pretty enough.” It’s ridiculous that we still are being treated unfairly because of our looks.” says Kaia Recker.

In conclusion, women are discriminated in the workplace for many ridiculous and absurd reasons and it is not right. Hopefully one day, no one will be discriminated against for anything. Everybody needs to work together to solve this issue.

Workplace Discrimination (Rough Draft)

Right now, in the workplace, women are being discriminated against for their gender. There are many issues like wage gap, ability to get promotions, interview questions, starting salaries, and the ability to get the job. Even with proper qualifications women continue to struggle in the workplace.

One very interesting example of this is that women are often asked if they have or ever plan on having children, whereas men are rarely ever asked that sort of question. This question leads into another important topic which is that women who have children are even less likely to be promoted and in some places even hired in the workplace than women who do not have children and men.

Another interesting topic is women are more likely to be judged in the workplace based on their looks than men. Some women struggle to be taken seriously because they are to “pretty” or “young.” Some women also struggle with being told they can’t do particular jobs such as being a salesperson because they are not “pretty enough.” People also discriminate against women because they look “too old” or “too young.”

Hurricane Harvey Hits Houston Hard

This week Texas has received over 50 inches of rain. Nearly everybody in its path has had to evacuate. Shelters are starting to hit their maximum capacity. People”s houses are so flooded they will have to start their lives all over again.

Not only is this hurting the people of Texas, but the incredible amount of rainfall will cause oil and gas prices in Texas to go up. Some gas stations are selling for over eight dollars. This is causing many people to have even more difficulties with evacuating. If families can’t afford to pay for gas they cant leave the area and are forces to stay put in Texas.

Anther concern is how contaminated the water may be. If the water passes though an area that has harsh chemicals, bacteria, or anything else that is harmful, this could make the water very dangerous and can cause health problems.

Hurricane Harvey is said to be the most costly storms in U.S. history. Based on what city officials have found it will cost billions of dollars to repair Houston and the other cities around it. They still do not have a final price tag though, due to the fact that they are still trying to keep the rest of the city safe and they have to wait for water levels to lower.

“Horrible. Absolutely horrible,” says one woman.

“This devastation has changed so many peoples lives. Texas will never be the same.

Hurricane Harvey is a massive devastation on Texas. This is one of the worst storms in United States history, and no one knows what is coming next with this hurricane.

The Most Recent Book I’ve Read

The most recent book I have read is called “Unbelievable” by Sara Shepard. This book is part of a book series called “The Pretty Little Liars” series. These books are what the television show Pretty Little Liars was about. This book started with Hanna, one of the main characters in a coma due to a car accident. Aria, Hanna, and Emily are now all trying to find Spencer, who had recently become friends with her, to warn her. Meanwhile Spencer and Mona are driving in a car together when Mona reveals who she really is. She tries to hurt Spencer, however Spencer manages to escape, and all four girls are now safe.
